Your doctor will ask about your symptoms, when they occur, and what activities might aggravate them. During the physical exam, they will check for: Tenderness in the palm at the base of the fingers. Tingling or decreased sensation in the distribution of the median nerve. Muscle wasting at the base of the thumb (in severe cases). Diagnostic tests may include: Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS): These tests measure the speed at which electrical signals travel along your nerves. They can help identify nerve damage and pinpoint the location of the compression. Electromyography (EMG): This test measures the electrical activity produced by muscles, which can help assess nerve damage and muscle health. Imaging Tests: While not always necessary, X-rays, ultrasounds, or MRIs may be used to rule out other conditions or visualize the structures within the wrist. Treatment Options for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment for CTS depends on the severity of your symptoms. The goal is to relieve pressure on the median nerve and prevent further nerve damage. Conservative Treatments (for Mild to Moderate Cases) For milder cases, your doctor may recommend conservative approaches: Wrist Splinting: Wearing a wrist splint, especially at night, can help keep your wrist in a neutral position, reducing pressure on the median nerve.
