In diabetic nephropathy, the high glucose levels in the blood damage the glomeruli, which are tiny filtering units within the kidneys. This damage leads to the leakage of protein, particularly albumin, into the urine, a sign that the kidneys are not functioning optimally. It is estimated that about one in every three people with diabetes develops some form of kidney disease. Stages of Diabetic Nephropathy Diabetic nephropathy progresses through five stages, determined by the estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the amount of albumin in the urine. The GFR measures how well your kidneys are filtering waste from your blood, based on blood tests for creatinine. The stages are: Stage 1: Possible kidney damage, but kidneys function normally. Normally, urine contains very little or no albumin (below 30 mg/g). Higher levels indicate potential kidney disease. Symptoms of Diabetic Nephropathy The most concerning aspect of diabetic nephropathy is its insidious onset. In the early stages (Stages 1 and 2), there are often no noticeable symptoms.
