Christine Stavros shares her inspiring journey of living with ulcerative colitis, finding strength in cycling, and the vital role of community support.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affects the colon. It causes inflammation and ulcers in the innermost lining of the large intestine. While a UC diagnosis can be life-altering, it doesn't have to mean the end of an active and fulfilling life. This blog explores the journey of Christine Stavros, a UC patient who found strength, community, and a passion for cycling after her diagnosis.
Christine Stavros was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2006. Initially, she was hesitant to openly discuss her condition. However, her perspective began to shift when she joined Team Challenge, the fitness and fundraising initiative of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. This involvement marked a turning point, allowing her to channel her energy into something positive and proactive.
The challenges intensified five years after Christine's diagnosis when her husband, Pete, fell seriously ill. What was initially thought to be a stomach virus turned out to be a severe manifestation of UC. Pete experienced significant weight loss, developed a perforated bowel, and required multiple surgeries. This dual diagnosis within the family transformed Christine's role from a patient navigating her own health to also becoming a caregiver for her husband.
Before her UC diagnosis, Christine was an avid walker, participating in local races and even attempting a Couch to 5K program. However, joining Team Challenge in 2010 inspired her to push her physical boundaries further. The desire to add running to her repertoire became an extra challenge, a way to feel empowered and actively fight back against the disease.
In 2016, Christine transitioned her focus to cycling. What started as a 54-mile event, which seemed daunting at first, soon became a testament to her resilience. She went on to complete a century ride (100 miles), an accomplishment that still fills her with awe. Her preferred distance for a casual ride is now around 30 miles, showcasing her remarkable adaptation and commitment to fitness.
Christine's involvement with Team Challenge provided more than just a fitness outlet; it connected her with a supportive community of individuals who understood her struggles. She discovered that many people in her life, including co-workers and acquaintances, had been affected by IBD. This realization highlighted the importance of shared experiences and mutual support in managing chronic illnesses.
The feedback she received from others was incredibly encouraging. Learning about others who had lived with IBD for decades offered hope and perspective. This sense of belonging was crucial, especially when her husband was battling his own severe UC symptoms.
The experience of being diagnosed with the same chronic condition as her spouse was described as
