It is characterized by overwhelming daytime drowsiness and sudden, uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep. While the exact cause is unknown, it is believed to be related to a deficiency in hypocretin, a brain chemical that helps control wakefulness. This condition can significantly impact a person's quality of life, affecting their daily activities, work, and social interactions. Hallucinations These are vivid, dream-like experiences that can occur while falling asleep (hypnagogic hallucinations) or waking up (hypnopompic hallucinations). Genetics: While narcolepsy is not typically inherited, certain genes, particularly those in the HLA complex, are associated with an increased risk. Having a close family member with narcolepsy can increase an individual's risk by up to 40 times. Environmental Factors: Infections or exposure to certain toxins may trigger the autoimmune response in genetically predisposed individuals. Narcolepsy symptoms often begin in adolescence or early adulthood (between ages 15 and 30), but diagnoses can occur at any age. Most diagnoses, however, are made in individuals between 20 and 40 years old.
