Degenerative scoliosis is primarily linked to the breakdown of spinal structures over time. Several factors can increase the risk of developing or worsening degenerative scoliosis: Age: As we age, our spinal discs lose hydration and elasticity, making them more susceptible to degeneration. Smoking: Smoking has been linked to an increased risk of degenerative scoliosis. Nicotine can impair blood flow to the spinal tissues, accelerating degeneration. Physically Demanding Occupations: Jobs that involve heavy lifting, repetitive motions, or prolonged standing can put extra stress on the spine, potentially contributing to degenerative changes.
