Prevention of Clot Formation: In some high-risk individuals, healthcare providers might use thrombolytic medications to prevent the formation of new blood clots. When Blood Thinners Are Insufficient: If a patient is on standard blood-thinning medications but they are not effectively preventing or shrinking existing clots, a doctor might consider switching to or adding thrombolytic therapy. How is Thrombolysis Performed? The procedure for thrombolysis varies depending on the delivery method: Systemic Thrombolysis In systemic thrombolysis, the clot-busting medication is administered directly into a vein, usually through an IV line in the arm. In some cases, the catheter may also be equipped with tools to physically break up or remove the clot, a procedure known as mechanical thrombectomy.
