Research, including a 2020 article in JAMA Cardiology, has shown the Martin equation to be more accurate than the Friedewald equation. In 2018, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association recommended that laboratories adopt the Martin equation, especially for calculating samples with low LDL cholesterol levels, to improve diagnostic accuracy.

This equation is also used to determine LDL cholesterol levels. Previously, many labs used the Friedewald equation, but newer methods like the NIH and Martin equations are increasingly being adopted to enhance the accuracy of blood test results.
