Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE): This is a refined extract from the leaves of the lemon eucalyptus tree. Its potency comes from a concentrated active ingredient called para-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD). Commercial OLE products typically contain a higher concentration of PMD, often around 20-30%.
Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil: This is obtained by distilling the leaves of the lemon eucalyptus tree. While it also contains PMD, its composition is different, with a major component being citronellal. It's used for various purposes, including aromatherapy and topical applications for skin and respiratory issues, but its primary role isn't as a potent insect repellent.
Synthetic PMD: PMD can also be manufactured in a laboratory. These synthetic PMD products are also used as insect repellents, but they generally have a lower PMD concentration, typically around 10%.
