Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a surgical procedure that involves replacing the eye's natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This is the same procedure used for cataract surgery, but in RLE, it's performed specifically to correct refractive errors, including presbyopia. There are various types of IOLs available, including: Monofocal IOLs: These lenses are set to provide clear vision at a single distance (usually distance). If used for presbyopia, they would typically correct distance vision, and reading glasses would still be needed for near tasks. Multifocal IOLs: These advanced lenses have different zones that allow for clear vision at multiple distances β near, intermediate, and far. They are designed to significantly reduce or eliminate the need for glasses for most activities. Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs: These lenses provide a continuous range of vision from distance to near, offering a smoother visual experience compared to traditional multifocal lenses. Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) is a less common procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to reshape the cornea. It's typically used for mild cases of farsightedness and presbyopia. The radiofrequency energy causes the corneal tissue to contract, altering its curvature and improving near vision. However, the effects of CK may diminish over time, and it might not be as effective for moderate to severe presbyopia. What to Expect and Recovery The recovery process and expectations vary depending on the specific procedure. For LASIK-based procedures like monovision LASIK and PresbyLASIK, recovery is generally quick, with many people noticing improvements within a few days. Some initial blurriness or glare might occur, and it can take a few weeks for the brain to fully adapt to monovision. For Refractive Lens Exchange, recovery is similar to cataract surgery, typically involving a few weeks of diligent eye care, including using prescribed eye drops.
