Symptoms of Micronodular Cirrhosis In its early stages, cirrhosis, including micronodular cirrhosis, often presents with no noticeable symptoms. This is referred to as compensated cirrhosis. However, as the liver damage progresses and its function declines, various symptoms may emerge. These can include: Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes, due to the liver's inability to process bilirubin. Fatigue and Weakness: Persistent tiredness and lack of energy. Abdominal Pain and Swelling: Discomfort in the upper right abdomen and fluid buildup (ascites) causing swelling. Nausea and Vomiting: Feeling sick to the stomach and throwing up. Easy Bruising and Bleeding: The liver produces proteins essential for blood clotting, so impaired function can lead to bleeding issues. Spider-like Blood Vessels (Spider Angiomas): Small, red, spider-shaped blood vessels visible on the skin. Confusion and Memory Problems (Hepatic Encephalopathy): As toxins build up in the blood, they can affect brain function, leading to confusion, disorientation, and even coma in severe cases. Diagnosis of Micronodular Cirrhosis Diagnosing micronodular cirrhosis involves a combination of medical history assessment, physical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging studies. Complications of Micronodular Cirrhosis Micronodular cirrhosis can lead to several serious and potentially life-threatening complications due to impaired liver function: Portal Hypertension: Increased pressure in the portal vein, which carries blood from the digestive organs to the liver. This can lead to bleeding in the esophagus (esophageal varices) or stomach. Splenomegaly: An enlarged spleen, often a consequence of portal hypertension. Hepatic Encephalopathy: A buildup of toxins in the brain, affecting mental function. Increased Risk of Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma): Cirrhosis significantly raises the risk of developing primary liver cancer.
