Sensory memory is the shortest-term element of memory, acting as a buffer for stimuli received through the five senses. It's an automatic, unconscious process that retains impressions of sensory information after the original stimulus has ceased.
Without sensory memory, every experience would feel disjointed, and we wouldn't be able to string together sensory inputs into a coherent perception of the world.
