Calling an ambulance sounds simple until you're actually the one doing it, hands shaking, trying to explain an address you suddenly can't remember properly. This article walks through how ambulance services in Kolkata actually work, the difference between basic and advanced life support ambulances,

Nobody rehearses calling an ambulance. It's one of those things you assume you'll handle fine in the moment, right up until the moment actually arrives and your hands won't stop shaking long enough to read out your own address.
Kolkata has a reasonably wide network of ambulance options, government and private, but knowing how the system actually works before you need it makes a real difference. This isn't a scare piece. It's the practical version of a conversation worth having on a calm afternoon, not during an emergency.
India's national emergency number, 112, connects to police, fire and medical emergency services and works across the country, Kolkata included. The dedicated ambulance number, 108, is specifically for medical emergencies and dispatches government-coordinated ambulances.
Save both in your phone today, not as a bookmark you'll get to later. In an actual emergency, dialling a memorised number beats searching your contacts app while someone next to you is in distress.
Not every ambulance is built the same, and it's worth understanding the difference. A Basic Life Support, or BLS, ambulance is meant for stable patients who need transport and monitoring but aren't in immediate danger, think a scheduled hospital transfer or a non-critical injury.
An Advanced Life Support, or ALS, ambulance carries equipment like ventilators and defibrillators, along with staff trained to manage life-threatening situations during transport. If you're calling for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, major bleeding or loss of consciousness, this is the level of response you actually need, and it's worth stating the symptoms clearly when you call so dispatch sends the right vehicle the first time.
The 108 service is free and government-coordinated, which makes it the right first call in most genuine emergencies. Response times can vary depending on location and traffic, which is simply the reality of a dense city, not a criticism of the system.
Private ambulance services, often run independently or attached to specific hospitals, can sometimes offer a faster or more predictable response for a fee, particularly if you already have a relationship with a specific hospital. Larger hospitals with round-the-clock infrastructure, such as Manipal Hospitals' campuses at Barakhola Lane, Saltlake City and C.I.T Scheme, typically maintain their own ambulance and emergency setup alongside general admissions. Kolkata Police Hospital also lists round-the-clock emergency services, which is worth knowing about if you're closer to central Kolkata than to the larger private campuses.
This is where a genuine, uncomfortable question comes up, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a blanket rule. For a suspected heart attack, stroke symptoms, severe breathing trouble, major trauma or unconsciousness, calling an ambulance is almost always the better call, even if it feels slower in the moment. Trained personnel can begin stabilising treatment during transport, which a private car simply cannot offer.
For less severe situations, a family member driving to a nearby emergency care centre might genuinely be quicker, especially if traffic timing favours it. There's no shame in making that judgment call. The goal is getting appropriate care fast, not following a rulebook rigidly when the situation doesn't fit it.
In clinical practice, one pattern comes up again and again with stroke cases specifically. Families often choose to drive the patient themselves, thinking it saves time, and end up losing the window where clot-dissolving treatment is most effective, because an ambulance crew could have started assessment and alerted the receiving hospital in transit, while a private car arrives with no advance warning and the clock has already run further down. Stroke, in particular, is a condition where minutes decide outcomes, and pre-hospital coordination genuinely changes what's possible once the patient arrives.
If stroke symptoms are suspected, sudden facial drooping, arm weakness, or slurred speech, call an ambulance rather than driving, every time.
A few things are worth setting up now, while you're calm enough to do it properly.
Save 112 and 108 in your phone under clearly labelled names, not buried in a general contacts list.
Know the address of your home and workplace in a form you could read out under stress, house number, landmark, nearest main road.
Keep a note of any ongoing conditions and medications for family members, especially elderly parents, somewhere accessible instantly.
Identify your nearest hospital with genuine round-the-clock emergency capability in advance, through a quick hospital search, rather than guessing during the call itself.
If you have a usual treating doctor or cardiologist for an existing condition, keep their contact reachable too, since that context can help the receiving hospital.
