Dengue is caused by the dengue virus (DENV), which spreads to people almost exclusively through the bite of an infected female Aedes mosquito β most often Aedes aegypti. It is not spread by casual contact, coughing, or touching a sick person. A mosquito picks up the virus by biting someone who already has it in their blood, then passes it on to the next person it bites
Dengue doesn't jump directly from one person to another. A dengue virus cannot spread directly from person to person β an Aedes mosquito becomes infected only after it bites someone who already has the virus in their blood. That mosquito has to feed during the infected person's viremic period, when virus levels in the blood are high enough to pass on.
About a week after biting an infected person, the mosquito becomes capable of transmitting the virus to the next people it bites. From there, the cycle repeats: mosquito to human, human back to mosquito, and onward. This is how dengue infects millions of people every year, often multiple times over a lifetime.
The dengue virus reaches people mainly through bites from infected female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, with other Aedes species playing a smaller, secondary role. This mosquito lays its eggs in containers holding water near homes and bites both people and animals, which is part of why it thrives in populated areas.
Aedes aegypti is easy to overlook because of where it breeds. In cities, these mosquitoes lay eggs in everyday containers β cans, plastic cups, old tires, broken bottles, flowerpots β anywhere water collects, rather than in ponds or wetlands. Eggs are typically laid just above the waterline inside a container, roughly three days after the mosquito's blood meal.
This species needs a warm climate and generally can't survive at higher, colder altitudes, which is why it stays concentrated in tropical and subtropical regions and rarely establishes itself much beyond about 35 degrees north or south of the equator.
One detail that surprises a lot of people: dengue isn't caused by a single virus. There are four distinct but closely related dengue virus types β DEN-1 through DEN-4 β all belonging to the flavivirus family. Recovering from one type gives lifelong immunity to that specific type, but only partial, temporary protection against the other three.
This matters for severity, not just recurrence. People who've already had dengue once are more likely to develop severe dengue if they're later infected with a different strain.

Dengue isn't distributed evenly around the world, and the causes behind bigger outbreaks go beyond simply "more mosquitoes." Several factors are driving the disease's spread into new areas: shifting distribution of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, climate change bringing warmer temperatures and heavier rainfall, strained health systems, gaps in disease surveillance, and political or economic instability that disrupts mosquito control efforts.
Cities themselves play a role, too. Rapid, unplanned urbanization is linked to dengue spread through crowding, how people move between areas, and how households store water β all of which affect how easily Aedes aegypti can breed close to where people live.
Dengue has also been expanding into regions that historically saw few or no cases, including parts of Europe β France, Italy, and Spain reported cases to the WHO in 2024, alongside additional cases in French territories.
Mosquito bites cause the overwhelming majority of dengue infections, but a small number of other transmission routes have been documented. These include transmission from a pregnant person to their baby around the time of birth, and rare cases linked to blood transfusions or organ transplants from an infected donor. These routes are uncommon compared to mosquito-borne spread, and they don't change the core prevention message: avoiding mosquito bites is what actually prevents dengue for almost everyone.
Dengue has one primary cause worth remembering: an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito bite, most often in a warm climate where standing water gives that mosquito somewhere to breed. You can't catch it from another person directly, and there's no vaccine-free way to make yourself immune to all four virus types at once. The most effective thing anyone can do β at home or while traveling β is deny mosquitoes standing water and use repellent, since that interrupts the entire transmission cycle at its source.
Is dengue contagious from person to person? No. Dengue cannot spread directly between people. It requires a mosquito to bite an infected person and then bite someone else, carrying the virus between them.
What mosquito causes dengue? The primary carrier is the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which thrives in warm, urban environments and breeds in small containers of standing water near homes.
Can you get dengue more than once? Yes. There are four distinct dengue virus types, and immunity to one doesn't fully protect against the others. A second infection with a different type also carries a higher risk of severe illness.
