When a doctor says "get a CT scan," most people in Kolkata immediately start searching for the nearest or cheapest option. That's a reasonable starting point β but it's not the whole picture. CT scans vary in technology, turnaround time, and report quality across different centres in the city.

Most people who search "CT scan near me in Kolkata" are doing so at an inconvenient moment β a doctor has just handed them a referral, or a family member is unwell and needs imaging fast. Speed matters. But so does quality. The two are not always the same thing.
Here's what you actually need to know.
CT stands for Computed Tomography. The machine takes a series of X-ray images from different angles and combines them into detailed cross-sectional pictures of the inside of your body. Think of it as slicing through the body in thin layers and photographing each layer β the resulting images give doctors a far more complete picture than a standard X-ray.
Unlike MRI, a CT scan uses ionising radiation (the same type as X-rays, but in larger doses). For most adults in most situations, the radiation exposure is within acceptable limits and the clinical benefit far outweighs the risk. But it's worth knowing this, particularly if you're managing care for a child or someone who may need repeat imaging. Consult your doctor if you have questions. You can also find a general physician near you in Kolkata through Doctar to discuss what the scan involves before booking.
CT is fast, widely available, and excellent at detecting certain conditions quickly. In clinical practice, this is often where CT wins over MRI β when a patient comes in with suspected internal bleeding, a chest injury, or a stroke, a CT result in 15 minutes can genuinely change what happens next. It isn't always the most detailed tool, but it's often the most time-efficient one.
Common reasons for a CT scan in Kolkata include:
Stroke evaluation, head injuries, or unexplained headaches. A neurologist in Kolkata will typically be the one ordering this.
Lung infections, suspected tumours, pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs), or abnormalities found on a chest X-ray. A pulmonologist may refer you here.
Liver, kidney, pancreatic, or intestinal issues. A gastroenterologist in Kolkata or a urologist commonly orders these.
Disc problems, fractures, or spinal canal narrowing, often alongside a referral to an orthopedic specialist.
Tracking how cancer is responding to treatment or identifying spread.
Prices vary across Kolkata, and quoting a single definitive figure would mislead you. That said, here is a general, indicative range based on what diagnostic centres in the city typically charge. Always confirm directly with the centre before booking.
CT head (brain) β approximately βΉ1,800 to βΉ4,500.
CT chest β roughly βΉ2,500 to βΉ5,000.
CT abdomen and pelvis β can range from βΉ3,500 to βΉ7,000 or more, particularly when contrast is required.
CT spine β typically βΉ2,000 to βΉ5,500 per segment.
HRCT chest (High Resolution CT, commonly used for lung assessments including post-COVID evaluation) β roughly βΉ2,500 to βΉ4,500.
CT with contrast β the contrast agent, usually an iodine-based dye injected intravenously, can add βΉ1,000 to βΉ2,500 to the base scan cost. If your referral slip says "CECT" (Contrast Enhanced CT), the contrast is mandatory β don't try to skip it to save money.
You can search for diagnostic centres in Kolkata on Doctar, filter by imaging centre type, and compare rated facilities by area before calling to confirm pricing.
Three factors matter most.
Older CT scanners take slower, lower-resolution images. Newer multi-slice CT machines (64-slice, 128-slice) capture images faster, with less motion blur β particularly useful for cardiac or pediatric imaging. Faster machines also mean less time the patient spends inside the scanner. Worth asking the centre which machine they use.
As mentioned above, contrast scans always cost more. Contrast is not optional when your doctor has prescribed it β it changes what the scan can detect.
Large hospitals in Kolkata β including those listed on Doctar β often charge more than independent diagnostic centres. The premium sometimes buys you on-site emergency management and direct specialist follow-up; sometimes it doesn't. Know what you're paying for.
Proximity is important β but it's not the only criterion. A good CT centre should have:
This is the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories certification. It's the clearest public indicator that a lab meets national quality and safety standards. Doctar's diagnostic centre search badges NABL-accredited centres so you can identify them before booking.
The images mean nothing without a competent radiologist interpreting them. Ask whether the radiologist is on-site or whether the scan is sent elsewhere for reading.
For most non-emergency CT scans, same-day or next-day soft-copy reports are standard. If a centre quotes three to five days, that's a concern unless there's a clear reason.
Doctar lets you find imaging centres near you across Kolkata's neighbourhoods β from Salt Lake and Ultadanga to Behala, Tollygunge, and Gariahat. Patient ratings are based on verified post-visit feedback.
For abdominal CT scans, most centres ask you to fast for four to six hours. Brain, chest, and spine CTs usually require no preparation. Confirm with the centre when you book.
If you've had a reaction to iodine-based dye before β or if you have kidney problems β tell the centre and your doctor before the contrast is administered. This is not a minor detail.
Contrast dye is processed by the kidneys. If there's any history of chronic kidney disease, a blood test (serum creatinine) is usually required before a CECT scan. Some centres will ask for this automatically; some won't. If your referring doctor hasn't mentioned it, ask.
Unlike MRI, CT scans are generally safe with metal implants. The machine uses X-rays, not magnets.
CT exposes the patient to radiation. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, tell your doctor before booking. There may be an alternative.
You'll receive printed films (large X-ray-style sheets) and a written report from the radiologist. Most centres now also provide digital copies via CD or online portal. Take both the films and the report β not just one β to your follow-up appointment.
The report alone isn't a diagnosis. It's information your doctor interprets alongside your symptoms, history, and other tests. Don't self-interpret the findings from a CT report; the language used by radiologists is often more alarming than the clinical reality, and the reverse is also sometimes true.
If you need a specialist to review your CT report, Doctar lets you search specialists in Kolkata by area and specialty. For instance, a cardiologist in Kolkata for a cardiac CT, or an oncologist for suspected tumour work-up. For neurological findings, reach out to a neurologist.
If you're managing care for an elderly family member and travel is difficult, home visit doctors in Kolkata can review reports at home. Some diagnostic services also offer home sample collection for bloodwork that might accompany your CT workup.
For patients in nearby districts, Doctar also covers diagnostic centres in Howrah and other areas surrounding Kolkata.
