A major Cyclospora outbreak in 2026 has been linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico, with over 11,000 confirmed or probable cases nationally β far exceeding prior years. The 2026 Cyclospora outbreak is one of the largest the United States has seen in recent years. Over 11,000 confirmed or probable cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported to the CDC so far in 2026 β compared to just 2,700 cases in all of 2025. The main driver is a multistate outbreak tied to contaminated lettuce, and federal health officials are still investigating.
If you've eaten at certain fast food locations in the Midwest recently, or purchased specific lettuce products from Walmart, you need to know what's happening β and whether you're at risk.
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite β so small it cannot be seen without a microscope β that lives in the human intestine and causes an illness called cyclosporiasis. People become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with fecal particles from an infected person. It does not spread directly from person to person.
Case counts typically rise during spring and summer months, and the CDC considers May 1 through August 31 the annual cyclosporiasis season. Previous outbreaks have been linked to consuming contaminated fresh produce.
What makes this year unusual isn't the timing β it's the scale.
CDC, FDA, and public health officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico, distributed across five states.
Traceback data identified a single supplier of shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico used at Taco Bell locations where sick people ate before becoming ill. Not all Taco Bell locations in the affected states received lettuce from the same supplier.
On July 17, 2026, Taylor Farms de Mexico announced it was voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The recall includes Marketside-brand products sold at Walmart β "Iceberg Salad" in 12 oz. and 24 oz. sizes, and "Shredded Lettuce" in 8 oz. and 16 oz. sizes, with best-if-used-by dates of July 18 to August 3, 2026.
Do not eat these products. If you have them at home, throw them out or return them to the store.
As of the July 16 CDC update, a total of 1,644 people infected with Cyclospora and reporting exposure to Taco Bell have been confirmed across five states β Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 13 to July 13, 2026, and 94 hospitalizations have been reported. No deaths have been confirmed.
Michigan is carrying the heaviest burden by far. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports 6,571 cyclosporiasis cases in 2026 alone.
The confirmed count almost certainly understates the true toll. Because cyclosporiasis is often underdiagnosed and underreported, the true number of illnesses is likely higher than what has been reported to CDC. Many people recover without ever seeing a doctor or being tested.
People typically begin experiencing symptoms about one week after consuming contaminated food or water β though onset can range from as few as 2 days to 2 weeks or more.
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis can include:
Watery diarrhea (often described as frequent and explosive)
Loss of appetite and weight loss
Stomach cramps and bloating
Nausea and fatigue
Low-grade fever in some cases
Symptoms can last from a few days to a month or longer and may come and go. Without treatment, the illness sometimes resolves on its own β but in others, especially those with weakened immune systems, it can become prolonged and debilitating.

Cyclosporiasis is diagnosed through stool testing. Standard stool ova-and-parasite tests do not always detect Cyclospora β clinicians must specifically request testing for it, which is one reason the infection is frequently missed.
The standard treatment is a combination antibiotic called trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), commonly known as Bactrim or Septra. Patients who are allergic to sulfa drugs have fewer options, as no equally effective alternative has been established. Consult a healthcare provider if you suspect cyclosporiasis β do not attempt to self-treat.
The only reliable way to prevent cyclosporiasis is to avoid food and water that may be contaminated. Thoroughly washing fresh produce under clean running water before eating reduces risk, though chemical disinfecting or sanitizing may not fully eliminate Cyclospora. Produce should be washed even when labeled pre-washed.
Additional practical steps:
Avoid recalled products. Don't eat Taylor Farms de Mexico iceberg lettuce or the Marketside-brand products listed above.
Ask restaurants about their lettuce source. If you're unsure about the source of the iceberg lettuce in a dish, ask the restaurant directly.
Skip iceberg lettuce at affected Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia until the outbreak is declared over.
If you develop symptoms, see a doctor and mention any recent lettuce consumption or travel to an area with known cases.

Several factors may be driving the unusually high case counts this year. CDC is publishing weekly surveillance data updates in 2026 due to the increase in cases in multiple states compared to the same period in 2025.
One complicating factor: in July 2025, the CDC's foodborne surveillance network made testing for Cyclospora optional, which some experts say could be affecting outbreak detection and response. Fewer routine tests mean fewer confirmed cases, making it harder to catch clusters early.
The contamination source β iceberg lettuce from central Mexico β also illustrates how quickly a problem at a single supplier can scale across a national food supply chain.
Is it safe to eat iceberg lettuce right now?
It depends on the source. The recall applies specifically to iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico by Taylor Farms de Mexico, distributed to retail stores and restaurants. Lettuce from other suppliers is not part of this recall. If you're unsure, ask where your lettuce comes from, and wash all produce thoroughly before eating it.
Can you get Cyclospora from someone who is sick?
No. Cyclosporiasis is not usually spread directly from person to person. It requires ingesting the parasite's oocysts (eggs), which only become infectious days to weeks after being shed in feces β contaminating food or water along the way.
How long do Cyclospora symptoms last?
Symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks and may cycle on and off. Untreated cases sometimes persist for a month or more. With appropriate antibiotic treatment, most people improve within a few days.
Is this outbreak still active?
As of July 23, 2026, the outbreak investigation is ongoing. Check the CDC's Cyclosporiasis Outbreaks page for the most current updates, as case counts and guidance are being updated frequently.
Who is most at risk of serious illness?
Anyone can get cyclosporiasis, but older adults, young children, and people with weakened immune systems β including those on immunosuppressive medications or living with HIV β are more likely to experience severe or prolonged illness.
Check your fridge now for recalled Taylor Farms de Mexico iceberg lettuce. If you've eaten at a Taco Bell in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, or West Virginia since mid-May and developed stomach symptoms, contact a healthcare provider and specifically ask about Cyclospora testing β it won't show up on a routine stool test.
