Heart specialist" isn't one job title β it covers cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and electrophysiologists, and they don't all do the same thing.

"Heart specialist" gets used loosely. Ask ten people what it means and you'll get ten different answers β some think it's any doctor who reads an ECG, others assume it means someone who can operate. Neither is quite right, and the difference matters more than people expect when you're actually trying to book an appointment in South 24 Parganas.
This district is large and uneven in terms of healthcare access. Towns close to Kolkata β Sonarpur, Garia, Baruipur β sit near full cardiac centres. Further out, towards Diamond Harbour, Kakdwip, and the Sundarbans belt, specialist access thins out fast. So before getting into who to book, it's worth being clear on what a "heart specialist" actually is.
A cardiologist is a physician (MD or MBBS plus DM/DNB in Cardiology) who diagnoses and manages heart conditions β high blood pressure, chest pain, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), heart failure β using medication, ECGs, echocardiograms, and non-surgical procedures like angioplasty. Most people looking for a "heart specialist near me" actually need this kind of doctor.
A cardiac surgeon (often listed as cardiothoracic or cardiovascular surgeon) operates β bypass surgery, valve replacement, and similar procedures. You're usually referred to one by a cardiologist after tests show surgery is the right call, not as a first stop.
An electrophysiologist is a cardiologist with extra training specifically in heart rhythm problems β the kind of specialist you'd see for a pacemaker or a complex arrhythmia. This subspecialty is rare outside major Kolkata hospitals, and almost never available as a local option within South 24 Parganas itself.
For most first visits β chest discomfort, high blood pressure that isn't responding to treatment, breathlessness on exertion, or a family history of heart disease β a general cardiologist is the right starting point. You don't need to hunt for a subspecialist before you've even had a basic workup done.
Not every heart-related worry needs a specialist visit straight away. Mild, occasional palpitations with no other symptoms, routine blood pressure monitoring for someone already stable on medication, or a first-time high cholesterol reading can often be handled by a general physician, who will refer you onward if something looks off.
In clinical practice, this is often missed because people assume any heart symptom automatically means a cardiologist visit, and end up waiting longer for an appointment than they needed to, or paying a specialist fee for something a GP could have triaged in five minutes.
Realistically, the district's stronger cardiac infrastructure sits at its northern edge, where towns blend into greater Kolkata's hospital network. Diamond Harbour has a district hospital and some private nursing homes with visiting cardiologists, but full-time interventional cardiology cover β the kind needed for emergency angioplasty β is concentrated further north, closer to Kolkata's AMRI, Manipal, and similar hospital clusters.
That's not a criticism of the district's healthcare system so much as a fact of how cardiac infrastructure gets built in India generally β cath labs are expensive and cluster around dense urban demand. It does mean that for anything beyond routine care, knowing the nearest hospital with 24-hour cardiac emergency cover is worth more than knowing the nearest clinic.
Before booking, a few things are worth thirty seconds of checking:
Look for MD/MBBS plus DM or DNB in Cardiology after the doctor's name β that's the actual cardiology qualification, not just a general medicine background with a cardiology-sounding clinic name.
Check which hospital they're attached to, and whether that hospital has a cardiac catheterisation lab. A doctor who only sees patients at a small local nursing home may be excellent for routine care but isn't set up for an emergency intervention.
Ask about consultation fees upfront. Across South 24 Parganas and greater Kolkata, cardiologist fees commonly fall somewhere between βΉ500 and βΉ1,500 depending on experience and hospital tier β a figure well outside that range in either direction is worth a quick question, not necessarily a red flag.
If someone has crushing chest pain, pain radiating to the arm or jaw, sudden severe breathlessness, or collapses, don't spend time searching for a specialist. Call 108 or get to the nearest hospital with a 24-hour emergency department. Specialist selection is a decision for after the person is stabilised.
