Bihar has expanded its MBBS capacity for the 2026-27 academic year. The National Medical Commission’s July 2026 seat matrix records 26 MBBS medical colleges in the state, excluding Institutes of National Importance, with 4,160 seats.

Bihar has 26 MBBS medical colleges with 4,160 approved seats in the NMC’s seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year, excluding Institutes of National Importance (INIs). The figure includes 12 government colleges with 1,710 seats and 14 private colleges with 2,450 seats.
The increase is significant because Bihar had 3,420 MBBS seats in the previous matrix. The NMC approved 740 additional seats for 2026-27, including 190 government seats and 550 private seats.
For students, though, a larger seat count does not automatically make admission easy. NEET-UG rank, category, counselling rules, fees and the exact seat matrix still determine what options are realistically available.
Government colleges remain the most closely watched option for many NEET aspirants because their fee structures are generally different from private institutions and their seats are highly competitive.
The NMC’s MBBS records identify the following established government institutions in Bihar, while the 2026-27 state seat matrix should be treated as the final reference for the current admission cycle.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna
AIIMS Patna is an Institute of National Importance. Its MBBS seats are therefore treated separately from the 26-college Bihar total in the NMC state matrix.
Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College, Gaya
Darbhanga Medical College, Darbhanga
ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Bihta, Patna
Government Medical College, Bettiah
Government Medical College, Purnea
Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna
Jannayak Karpoori Thakur Medical College and Hospital, Madhepura
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Bhagalpur
Nalanda Medical College, Patna
Patna Medical College, Patna
Shri Krishna Medical College, Muzaffarpur
Bhagwan Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences, Pawapuri, Nalanda
The NMC's published records show the government colleges' MBBS intake and recognition history, while the July 2026 seat matrix records 12 government colleges and 1,710 seats for Bihar for AY 2026-27.
Students interested in healthcare beyond admissions can also browse general physicians in Patna, orthopedists in Patna, pediatricians in Patna and cardiologists in Patna on DOCTAR. These are doctor-discovery resources rather than college-ranking sources.
Bihar's private medical education sector has grown quickly in recent years. The 2026-27 NMC matrix lists 14 private medical colleges with 2,450 MBBS seats.
The NMC's college records identify private institutions including:
Himalaya Medical College and Hospital, Patna
Katihar Medical College, Katihar
Lord Buddha Koshi Medical College and Hospital, Saharsa
Madhubani Medical College, Madhubani
Mahabodhi Medical College & Hospital
Mata Gujri Memorial Medical College, Kishanganj
Narayan Medical College & Hospital, Sasaram
Netaji Subhas Medical College & Hospital, Bihta
Radha Devi Jageshwari Memorial Medical College and Hospital
Shree Narayan Medical Institute and Hospital
Shyamlal Chandrashekhar Medical College & S.P.N.M. Hospital
Viraat Ramayan Institute of Medical Sciences
The NMC's current records also contain these newer institutions and their permissions for MBBS intake. Students should not assume that an older college website or coaching-site list reflects the final 2026-27 approved intake.
For students researching healthcare options around Patna, DOCTAR also has gynecologists in Patna, gastroenterologists in Patna, pulmonologists in Patna and doctors in Anisabad, Patna.
The approved intake is not uniform. Some colleges have 100 or 120 seats, while others have 150, 200 or 250 seats.
For example, the NMC records show Patna Medical College at 200 seats, while Narayan Medical College & Hospital and Madhubani Medical College have records showing 250-seat capacity in the relevant approval history.
The important point is that students should use the AY 2026-27 seat matrix, not simply copy the number shown on an institution's older website.
In clinical practice, the quality of a medical college is also closely connected to the clinical exposure students receive. A college attached to a busy teaching hospital can offer a very different learning environment from a smaller institution, even when both offer the same MBBS degree.
Admission to MBBS courses is based on NEET-UG followed by the applicable counselling process. For Bihar state counselling, candidates should follow the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board's UGMAC process and its current prospectus and seat matrix.
The 2026 counselling cycle is particularly important because the number of seats has changed substantially. The NMC confirmed the 4,160-seat Bihar matrix on July 13, 2026, so students should use this year's figures while filling choices.
Do not choose a college only because it appears near the top of an online list. Check recognition, approved intake, tuition and other charges, hostel arrangements, hospital facilities, location and the counselling rules applicable to your category.
For medical information after admission, students and families can also explore neurologists in Patna, urologists in Patna, dermatologists in India, ophthalmologists in India and doctors across India.
The biggest practical difference for families is usually cost. Government and private medical colleges can have very different tuition and other charges, so the fee structure should be checked directly in the current counselling documents.
Location also matters. A student may prefer a college closer to home, while another may prioritise hospital exposure, infrastructure or postgraduate opportunities.
There is no single answer to which type is “better.” The sensible choice depends on rank, budget, category, counselling eligibility and the student's priorities.
Students researching healthcare professionals in Bihar can also browse doctors in Muzaffarpur and doctors in Phulwarisharif, Patna.
The college name is only the starting point. Before locking choices, candidates should verify the approved MBBS intake for 2026-27, counselling category, tuition and other fees, hostel availability, location, hospital attachment and the institution's current NMC status.
Students should also check whether a newly established college has a complete first-year infrastructure and what clinical facilities are available as the batches progress.
DOCTAR's Patna doctor search and Muzaffarpur doctor listings can help readers explore healthcare providers in cities where medical colleges and teaching hospitals are located.
