Bihar's MBBS NEET counselling for 2026 runs through BCECEB under the UGMAC process, covering 85% state quota seats across government and private medical colleges.

Every year around this time, WhatsApp groups of NEET aspirants in Bihar light up with half-correct information. Someone's cousin heard the dates are out. Someone else swears the seat matrix changed. The truth is simpler, and it's worth laying out plainly.
Bihar's MBBS counselling for 2026 is handled by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board, known as BCECEB, through a process called UGMAC β Under Graduate Medical Admission Counselling. This is separate from the All India Quota counselling run by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). If your child qualified NEET UG 2026, this is the process for the 85% state quota seats in Bihar's government and private medical colleges.
BCECEB opened registration and choice-filling for Round 1 and Round 2 together on August 10, 2026. The window to register, pay fees, and submit choices closed on August 14, 2026, at 11:59 PM. Choice locking β the step where a candidate finalises the college and course preferences β closed on August 17, 2026.
Seat allotment for these rounds follows soon after, based on NEET rank, category, and the choices locked. Candidates who get a seat in Round 1 have to complete document verification and admission between August 24 and August 27, 2026.
Round 3, also called the Mop-Up round, and the Stray Vacancy round for leftover seats come later, with dates announced separately by BCECEB once the earlier rounds are settled. If your child didn't get a preferred seat in the first two rounds, this is not the end of the road β it's just the next stage.
Eligibility sounds obvious until it isn't. A candidate needs to have qualified NEET UG 2026, and for most state quota seats, Bihar domicile requirements apply β though the exact rules and exceptions are listed in BCECEB's official notification, which changes slightly year to year. Don't assume last year's eligibility PDF still applies; check the current one.
Age, qualifying marks, and category-based relaxations follow NEET's own norms. Where families most often go wrong is with reservation category documentation β an EWS or OBC certificate issued a year too early can get rejected during verification, and there's no fixing that mid-process.
The steps are fairly mechanical, but skipping order causes real problems:
Register on the official BCECEB UGMAC portal using NEET UG 2026 roll number and basic details.
Verify the account through the activation code sent by SMS and email.
Pay the counselling fee and security deposit.
Upload documents β mark sheets, category certificates, domicile proof, ID.
Fill choices in order of genuine preference, not just "safe" options.
Lock choices before the deadline. An unlocked choice list may not be considered for allotment.
In clinical admissions counselling β and I say this having watched several batches of Bihar candidates go through this β the most common and entirely avoidable mistake is treating choice filling as optional busywork. Students fill in five or six colleges and stop, assuming they can add more later. They usually can't, not once the window shuts.
This trips up a lot of families every year, so it deserves its own line. Bihar's UGMAC counselling covers 85% of seats in government medical colleges as state quota. The remaining 15% falls under All India Quota, managed separately by MCC β a different portal, different timeline, different rules entirely. Private medical and dental colleges in Bihar are covered fully under UGMAC. Mixing these two processes up, or assuming one login works for both, causes real delays.
Once allotted, reporting to the college with original documents within the stated window matters more than most people realise. Missing the reporting date, even by a day, can mean forfeiting the seat entirely β BCECEB doesn't typically make exceptions for late arrivals, medical emergencies aside, and even then it requires formal communication in advance.
Carry originals and photocopies both. Colleges have, more than once, rejected candidates over something as small as a mismatched spelling between the NEET admit card and the domicile certificate.
Rank matters, but so does thinking beyond just the college's reputation. Hostel facilities, clinical exposure in the attached hospital, and faculty strength in the department a student is interested in are all worth researching β not just Googling "best medical college in Bihar" and picking whatever ranks first. NEET counselling decisions shape the next 5-plus years of a young doctor's training; it's worth the extra hour of research.
