Understand the causes, symptoms, and diagnosis of period cramps (dysmenorrhea) with insights from Dr. Priya Sharma.
By Dr. Priya Sharma, MD — Internal Medicine Specialist, Apollo Hospitals, Delhi
Menstrual cramps, medically known as dysmenorrhea, are a common yet often distressing experience for many women. Living with this is genuinely hard.
We often see patients in our clinics seeking relief and understanding about the pain they endure each month. In my practice at Apollo Hospitals, Delhi, I've seen countless individuals grappling with this issue, and it's crucial to shed light on its causes and diagnosis.
Period cramps are typically felt as a throbbing or cramping pain in the lower abdomen. They can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that interferes with daily activities. But why does this happen? The primary culprit is a group of hormone-like substances called prostaglandins.
These are released from the lining of the uterus (endometrium) during menstruation. Prostaglandins cause the uterine muscles to contract, which helps shed the uterine lining. However, these contractions can also constrict blood vessels supplying the uterus, leading to oxygen deprivation and pain.
Think about it this way: imagine squeezing a sponge filled with water; the pressure causes discomfort. Similarly, intense uterine contractions can squeeze blood vessels, causing pain.
It's vital to distinguish between two main types:
While prostaglandins are the main drivers of primary dysmenorrhea, several factors can influence the intensity of cramps. Worth knowing: lifestyle and underlying conditions play a significant role.
The signs of period cramps can vary greatly. What most people miss: the pain isn't always confined to just the abdomen. So what does that mean for you? Recognizing these indicators helps in seeking timely medical advice.
That alone changes everything.
In many cases, mild to moderate cramps are considered normal. However, if the pain is severe, debilitating, or accompanied by other concerning indicators, it warrants a medical evaluation.
Diagnosing dysmenorrhea involves a thorough discussion with your doctor and a physical examination. Our approach at Apollo Hospitals is patient-centric.
The goal of diagnosis is to differentiate between primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Identifying an underlying cause is crucial for impactful treatment. Remember, relying solely on over-the-counter pain relievers without understanding the root cause might mask a more marked issue.
Experiencing severe period pain every month doesn't have to be your reality. Early diagnosis and appropriate management can significantly enhance your quality of life. Don't hesitate to discuss your concerns with a healthcare provider. We are here to support you in finding the most suitable therapy.
