Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm eye ointment is used to treat bacterial eye infections. It belongs to a medicine group called macrolide antibiotics.
Avoid using more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms: Liver damage or irregular heart rhythm
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm is a macrolide antibiotic that acts by inhibiting protein synthesis of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal element. Thus, it shows bacteriostatic (stops bacteria from reproducing) or bactericidal (kills the bacteria) activity depending on the organism and drug concentration.
Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm eye ointment is meant to be used only for the eyes. Wash your hands before and after ointment application; try not to touch the tip of the tube with your hands as it may contaminate and cause allergy, irritation, swelling or itching of the eyes during application. First, tilt your head in the backward direction while sitting or lying down on the bed. Gently pull down your lower eyelid (affected eye) with your index finger, then squeeze a thin layer of ointment into the eye. Close your eyes gently for 1 or 2 minutes to spread the ointment. Use your dose at regular intervals. Continue the course for the full length of prescribed time even if your symptoms exhaust.
It may be used during pregnancy as there is no known risk of foetal harm based on animal data, and there are no controlled studies on human pregnancy. Therefore, it is best to consult the doctor before usage of the ointment.
It is not known whether Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm passes into breast milk. So, before breastfeeding consult your doctor.
After you apply this drug, your vision may become temporarily blurred. Do not drive, do any activity that requires clear vision, or use machinery until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.
Alcohol does not prevent Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm from treating the bacterial infection

If your eye infection does not improve within a few days, or if it becomes worse, check with your doctor. This medicine may cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. Call your doctor right away if you have a rash; itching; hives; hoarseness; shortness of breath; trouble breathing; trouble swallowing; or any swelling of your hands, face or mouth after you take this medicine. Serious skin reactions can occur with this medicine. Stop this medicine usage and check with your doctor right away if you have peeling, blistering, or skin loosening, red skin lesions, skin rash or severe acne, skin sores or ulcers, chills or fever while you are using this medicine.
If you are allergic to the ingredients used in Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm
Do not take antacids together with Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm. Antacids could reduce the effectiveness of Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm. If you want to take antacids, take them at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm. Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here: - heart medicines such as digoxin, digitoxin and amiodarone - warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine) - lovastatin and other similar cholesterol medicines - migraine medicines that contain ergotamine - other medicines such as nelfinavir, triazolam Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist about your previous medical history, especially of other eye problems.
Keep Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm eye ointment out of sight and reach of children. Store in a cool place away from sunlight and moisture.
After you apply this drug, your vision may become temporarily blurred. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.
You must discuss about your ongoing medicines (herbal and complementary medicines) and history of allergies, if any, with your healthcare provider. Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (breathlessness, rashes, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as clarithromycin, erythromycin or any other macrolide antibiotics.
Do not wear contact lenses while you are using this medicine to avoid further eye irritation.
Do not use this medication while wearing contact lenses. Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm ointment may contain a preservative that can discolour soft contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using Azithral 1% Eye Oint 5gm ointment before putting on your contact lenses. You should not wear contact lenses if you still have active symptoms of the eye infection you are treating (eye redness, irritation, or drainage).
