Betahistine is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in this medication. It is indicated for the management of Meniere's syndrome, a chronic disorder affecting the inner ear. Meniere's syndrome is characterized by a triad of symptoms: episodic vertigo (a sensation of spinning or dizziness), tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears), and fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss, often accompanied by a feeling of fullness or pressure in the affected ear, and sometimes nausea or vomiting.
The exact cause of Meniere's syndrome is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve an abnormal fluid buildup in the inner ear. Betahistine is thought to exert its therapeutic effects by improving microcirculation in the inner ear, specifically by dilating blood vessels in the stria vascularis. This action helps to reduce the endolymphatic pressure within the inner ear, thereby alleviating the symptoms associated with Meniere's syndrome.
The medication aims to decrease the frequency and severity of vertigo attacks, reduce the intensity of tinnitus, and potentially mitigate hearing fluctuations.
If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for a missed one.
This medicine improves blood flow in the inner ear and reduces pressure built in the ear.
