This medication is an antibiotic prescribed for bacterial infections affecting various body systems, including the urinary tract, lungs, airways, sinuses, throat, and windpipe. It is a combination drug containing cefpodoxime and clavulanic acid as its active ingredients. Cefpodoxime, a cephalosporin antibiotic, works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, a critical process for bacterial survival.
This disruption leads to the death of the bacteria. However, some bacteria produce enzymes called beta-lactamases, which can inactivate cefpodoxime, rendering it ineffective. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents these enzymes from destroying cefpodoxime.
By protecting cefpodoxime from degradation, clavulanic acid ensures that the antibiotic can effectively target and eliminate susceptible bacteria. This combined action broadens the antibiotic's spectrum of activity, making it effective against a wider range of bacterial strains, including those that might otherwise be resistant to cefpodoxime alone. The medication's efficacy relies on its ability to disrupt bacterial growth and survival in various body systems.
