This product is a sterile, synthetic, absorbable monofilament suture made from polydioxanone polymer. It is designed for use in surgical procedures where tissue support is required for an extended period. The suture is violet in color, which aids in its visibility during surgical manipulation.
The material undergoes hydrolysis, resulting in gradual absorption by the body over approximately 180 to 210 days. This absorption profile allows for sustained tissue support during the critical healing phases without the need for suture removal.
The suture is presented with a 9.3mm, 3/8 circle, MultiPass CC double needle. This needle configuration is designed for precise tissue penetration and manipulation, facilitating secure knot tying and consistent wound closure.
The MultiPass designation indicates its suitability for multiple passes through tissue. The CC designation refers to the needle's specific curvature and point type, optimized for certain surgical applications. The double needle configuration allows for simultaneous closure from opposing sides or for specific suturing techniques requiring two points of entry.
Key features of this suture include its high tensile strength retention throughout the initial healing period. Specifically, it retains approximately 70% of its original tensile strength at two weeks post-implantation, 50% at four weeks, and 25% at six weeks. This gradual loss of strength corresponds to the progressive healing and regaining of tensile strength by the approximated tissues.
The monofilament construction minimizes tissue drag and reduces the risk of bacterial proliferation compared to braided sutures. Its smooth surface also contributes to ease of handling and knot security.
This type of suture is utilized by a range of medical professionals, including surgeons, surgical residents, and operating room nurses. It is appropriate for use in both human and veterinary medicine. Patients undergoing procedures requiring internal tissue approximation will benefit from its absorbable nature, eliminating the need for subsequent suture removal.
Caregivers may also be involved in post-operative wound care where the presence of absorbable sutures is a factor.
Typical applications for PDS II sutures include soft tissue approximation and ligation in various surgical specialties. This can encompass procedures in general surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery (for soft tissue repair), gynecological surgery, and urological surgery. Its extended absorption profile makes it suitable for situations where prolonged wound support is beneficial, such as fascial closures, tendon repairs, and gastrointestinal anastomoses.
The specific needle design further dictates its suitability for delicate tissues or specific anatomical locations.
When using this product, it is important to adhere to established surgical techniques for handling and knot tying synthetic absorbable sutures. Excessive tension should be avoided to prevent suture breakage and tissue damage. The suture should be handled with appropriate surgical instruments to maintain its integrity.
As with all sterile medical devices, proper aseptic technique must be employed during its use. The suture is supplied sterile and is intended for single use only. Once opened, any unused portion should be discarded.
