Fastovorin 50mg Injection is a medication primarily used to counteract the toxic effects of methotrexate, an antineoplastic agent employed in cancer chemotherapy. The active ingredient, calcium folinate, is a derivative of folinic acid, which is a reduced form of folic acid. Methotrexate works by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase, an enzyme essential for DNA synthesis and cell division, thereby targeting rapidly dividing cancer cells.
However, this mechanism can also harm healthy, rapidly dividing cells in the body, leading to adverse effects such as myelosuppression, mucositis, and gastrointestinal toxicity. Calcium folinate acts as a \"rescue\" agent by providing a source of reduced folate that bypasses the inhibited enzyme, allowing healthy cells to synthesize DNA and repair themselves, thus mitigating methotrexate's systemic toxicity without compromising its anticancer efficacy. This injection is administered under medical supervision by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinical setting.
It is not intended for self-administration.
