Discover the inspiring work of Lisa Price and Latham Thomas with Love Delivered, an advocacy campaign dedicated to improving Black maternal health outcomes and empowering birthing individuals.

It’s a stark reality, one that echoes across communities and demands our urgent attention: Black women in India, like their counterparts globally, face disproportionately higher risks during childbirth. The numbers are not just statistics; they represent mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends whose lives are tragically cut short. This isn't a new problem, but one that has persisted for decades, often met with a deafening silence. The disparities are not confined to one group; they cut across education levels and economic backgrounds. Even Black women with college degrees are significantly more likely to die during childbirth than white women with similar educational achievements. They also experience more severe pregnancy complications, including dangerous conditions like hypertension, eclampsia, and preeclampsia, all of which can have fatal consequences.
These alarming figures have been documented for years, yet systemic change remains elusive. We’ve seen glimpses of hope when high-profile figures like Serena Williams, Beyoncé, and Allyson Felix share their challenging birth experiences, making headlines worldwide. But the silent, unimaginable losses of everyday mothers – women like Kyira “Kira” Dixon Johnson, Sha’asia Washington, and Dr. Chaniece Wallace – underscore the critical need for immediate, tangible action. Their stories, though heartbreaking, fuel a movement.
Enter Lisa Price and Latham Thomas, two passionate mothers, successful entrepreneurs, and fierce advocates for Black women. Lisa Price, the visionary behind the global natural hair and body care line Carol’s Daughter, started her empire from a humble kitchen in Brooklyn back in 1993. Latham Thomas, a beacon in maternal health, is the founder of Mama Glow, a global maternal health company, and the co-founder of the Mama Glow Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing reproductive justice. Their shared commitment to empowering and supporting Black birthing individuals led them to launch the Love Delivered advocacy campaign. This initiative is designed to provide much-needed support, care, and empowerment during the most vulnerable times – pregnancy and childbirth.
The drive behind Love Delivered is deeply rooted in their own experiences as mothers. Lisa Price recounts a largely positive experience with the birth of her first child, Forrest, now 25, who was delivered via C-section. However, her second birth was markedly different. Labelled a “geriatric pregnancy” from the start, the delivery of her son Ennis presented unforeseen challenges. She later learned that the initial C-section had been complicated by the need to surgically remove scar tissue from her first C-section, consuming the first 45 minutes of the procedure before the baby could even be delivered. This personal encounter with the complexities and potential risks of childbirth, even when seeking standard medical care, ignited a fire within her.
Latham Thomas, too, has navigated the landscape of maternal health, founding her maternal health company and foundation to address critical gaps in care and support. Their combined insights, gathered from personal trials and a deep understanding of the maternal health system, formed the bedrock of their advocacy. They understood that simply sharing stories wasn't enough; tangible resources and organized advocacy were essential to effect real change.
The statistics are stark and unwavering: Black women are three times more likely to die during childbirth compared to white women. For those over 30, this risk escalates to four times higher. The infant mortality rate for Black babies is also double the national average. These aren't minor deviations; they are chasms in care. In 2020, the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, a significant piece of legislation aimed at addressing these disparities, unfortunately took a backseat amidst global health emergencies. This highlights the persistent struggle to prioritize maternal health, particularly for marginalized communities.
Price and Thomas recognized the need for a grassroots approach, a movement built on empowerment and collective action. They began collaborating in 2020, texting each other about creating a powerful advocacy platform for Black maternal healthcare. Their vision for Love Delivered is ambitious yet achievable. Over the next three years, they aim to activate 10,000 advocates and reach 100 million people through impactful impressions. This isn't about wearing capes or possessing superpowers; it's about harnessing collective will, determination, and mental fortitude.
The Love Delivered website serves as a vital hub, offering a comprehensive 13-page resource guide. This guide connects individuals with crucial legislative information and a wealth of educational materials. Think podcasts, insightful books, in-depth articles, and compelling essays – all designed to inform, empower, and equip people with the knowledge they need to navigate their maternal health journeys and advocate for change. It’s a digital toolkit for transformation.
Price likens the growth of this advocacy movement to the expansion of her own company, Carol's Daughter, in the '90s and 2000s. She believes in the power of what her husband coined the “sister girl network” – a supportive, interconnected web of women empowering each other. This network is precisely what Love Delivered aims to cultivate and amplify. It’s about building a community where experiences are shared, support is readily available, and collective voices can drive meaningful policy and practice changes.
