Placida is a medication that contains a combination of two drugs, Flupentixol (0.5mg) and Melitracen (10mg), primarily used in the treatment of depression. Flupentixol belongs to a group of drugs called antipsychotics, whereas Melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant.
This combination at this particular dosage is used in the management of mild to moderate depression and anxiety. Flupentixol is a first-generation antipsychotics. This drug works by blocking dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain.
At low doses (0.5- 3mg), this drug shows anti-depressant effects. It has also shown to decrease thoughts of self-harm in users who have such tendencies in depression.
Melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant that acts on multiple brain pathways to increase levels of certain neurotransmitters, effectively decreasing the user’s symptoms. It acts by preventing the re-uptake of both serotonin as well as nor-adrenaline. It has both anti-depressant and anti-anxiety properties.
Placida should be taken as per the physician's recommendation only. It is best to take the tablet at the same time every day as this ensures the best action of the medication, decreasing the chances of relapse of symptoms significantly. It is also recommended to complete the entire course of the medication as prescribed.
Overdose is characterized by extreme agitation, excitement, confusion, sleepiness, coma, convulsions, and hyperthermia or hypothermia, frequently succeeded by sedation. Extrapyramidal symptoms or respiratory and circulatory collapse may be observed. QT prolongation, ECG changes, cardiac arrest, and ventricular arrhythmias have been reported with large doses of Flupentixol. In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment should be initiated with airway management. In case of a suspected overdose, immediately rush the patient to the nearest medical centre for emergency management as it can be life threatening.
If you miss a dose of this tablet, it is advised to take it as soon as possible. If the duration missed is too long, and it is almost time for the next dose, it is recommended to skip the missed dose and go back to the regular schedule. Do not double the dose of the tablet.
Flupentixol belongs to a class of drugs known as first-generation antipsychotics. At lower doses (between 0.5mg to 3mg), it is known to exert antidepressant effects, particularly in combination with Melitracen. It acts on two chemicals that act as signals in the brain, otherwise known as neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters involved here are dopamine and serotonin. Flupentixol effectively blocks the dopamine and serotonin receptors, thus causing antidepressant actions on the brain. Melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). The exact mechanism of action of Melitracen is still unclear, but it is hypothesized to behave like other TCAs such as Amitriptyline and Imipramine. It works on multiple brain pathways to increase levels of certain neurotransmitters, effectively decreasing the user’s presenting symptoms. The neurotransmitters involved here include serotonin and nor-adrenaline. It also produces anti-anxiety effects in users. This medication may be required to be taken over a long duration for maximum efficacy. Abrupt stoppage of this medication may produce withdrawal symptoms.
