Discover the common causes of a smelly body, from hygiene to underlying health conditions. Learn about diagnosis and treatment options.

Many of us have experienced the embarrassment of a persistent body odour. Itβs a common concern that can significantly impact social interactions and self-confidence.
In my practice at Apollo Hospitals, I've seen patients struggle with this, often feeling helpless. Honestly, understanding the root cause is the first step towards effective management.
The primary reason for body odour is the interaction between bacteria on our skin and sweat. Our bodies have two main types of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine. Eccrine glands are all over the body and produce watery sweat to cool us down.
Apocrine glands are mainly in the armpits and groin; their sweat is thicker and contains fats and proteins. When bacteria break down this apocrine sweat, they produce volatile compounds that cause odour.
However, sometimes a persistent or unusual smell can indicate something more. Here's the thing β several factors can contribute:
Beyond general body odour, certain specific conditions can cause distinct smells:
This condition involves sweating much more than necessary. While sweat itself is mostly odourless, excessive moisture creates a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. In many cases, hyperhidrosis can lead to significant social anxiety.
This is the medical term for foul-smelling body odour. It's often linked to apocrine sweat glands and bacterial activity. The smell can vary but is typically unpleasant.
A bacterial infection affecting hair follicles, primarily in the armpits. It causes yellowish, sometimes reddish, crusts on the hair shafts, leading to an odour.
A rare genetic disorder where the body cannot break down trimethylamine, a compound with a strong fishy smell. This odour is released in sweat, urine, and breath. Worth knowing: managing this often involves strict dietary changes.
Here's where it gets interesting.
Physicians also look for links to:
Is there a better way than just masking the smell? Yes, by addressing the underlying cause.
Diagnosing the source of a persistent or unusual body odour involves a careful medical evaluation. What should you actually do? Start by consulting a physician. They will likely:
I've seen sufferers relieved just by knowing what's causing their discomfort. This knowledge empowers them to seek the right therapy.
management is tailored to the specific cause identified during diagnosis. Generally, reliable management strategies include:
Living with a concern that causes embarrassing odour is genuinely hard. However, with the right approach, improvement is absolutely achievable. Think of it like tending to a plant; consistent care and addressing its specific needs will help it flourish.
If you have sensitive skin, opt for deodorants labelled 'for sensitive skin' or 'hypoallergenic'. Avoid products with alcohol or strong fragrances, which can cause irritation. Patch testing a new product on a small area first is always a good idea.
Stress can indeed worsen body odour. When you're stressed, your body releases stress hormones that activate the apocrine sweat glands. This sweat is richer in fats and proteins, providing more for bacteria to break down, thus potentially increasing odour.
Not necessarily. While it can sometimes indicate an underlying issue like diabetes or a metabolic disorder, more often, it stems from hygiene, diet, or normal bacterial activity. A physician can benefit determine if further investigation is needed.
That's the part worth remembering.
Always consult a qualified physician before making medical decisions.
