Understand the common causes of a stuffy nose, its key symptoms, and how doctors diagnose this frequent ailment. Learn when to seek medical advice.
By Dr. Priya Sharma, MD β Internal Medicine Specialist, Apollo Hospitals, Delhi
A blocked or obstructed sensation in the nose frequently prompts individuals to seek medical advice. This occurs when the delicate tissues within the nasal passages swell, a result of increased circulation. Such an impediment to airflow can render respiration quite challenging. A great many individuals have encountered this bothersome symptom.
The condition known as rhinitis, or nasal congestion, arises from the dilation of small vessels within the respiratory pathways. This vascular expansion precipitates tissue swelling and an accumulation of mucus, thereby impeding the passage of air.
It is often observed that this obstruction intensifies upon reclining. While gravitational forces contribute, the underlying inflammatory process is the principal determinant of this discomfort.
Various elements may initiate this feeling of blockage. Pinpointing the exact etiology is essential for successful therapeutic intervention.
Allergic reactions manifest when the immune system exhibits an exaggerated response to benign agents such as pollen, microscopic dust mites, animal dander, or specific dietary items. Histamine is released by the organism, instigating inflammatory processes and tissue expansion within the respiratory tracts.
Ocular pruritus and sneezing frequently coexist with allergic airway obstruction. This cluster of symptoms serves as a critical differentiator from infectious etiologies.
Contact with irritants such as tobacco smoke, potent fragrances, atmospheric pollutants, or chemical vapors may provoke irritation of the nasal mucosa, resulting in transient airway blockage. This form of non-allergic rhinitis represents a physiological protective response.
And yet, so many people miss it.
Accurately identifying the precise origin of an obstructed nose enables the formulation of the most efficacious management strategy. Medical practitioners employ a multifaceted diagnostic approach.
A physician typically commences the diagnostic process by eliciting a comprehensive medical history, inquiring about symptom onset, exacerbating or ameliorating factors, and any associated signs. A standard physical examination involves inspecting the internal nasal cavity, often utilizing a speculum and light source.
This direct visualization can disclose tissue edema, the chromatic characteristics of any discharge, or patent anatomical irregularities.
Depending on the suspected etiology, further investigations may be recommended:
Worth keeping in mind: the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines underscore the critical role of a comprehensive medical history and physical examination as the foundational elements in the diagnostic assessment of the majority of conditions affecting the respiratory tract.
Although the majority of instances involving a blocked nose spontaneously improve or respond to basic self-care measures,
