Learn about In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), including symptoms of infertility, diagnostic tests, and the IVF procedure. Expert insights from Dr. Priya Sharma.
By Dr. Priya Sharma, MD β Internal Medicine Specialist, Apollo Hospitals, Delhi
Infertility affects many couples, and for some, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), often called the 'test tube baby' procedure, offers a path to parenthood. In my practice at Apollo Hospitals, Delhi, I've guided numerous individuals and couples through this journey.
Understanding the process, including how infertility is diagnosed and the typical signs, is crucial.
IVF is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART). It involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body β in a laboratory dish. The resulting embryo is then transferred to the woman's uterus. Think about it this way: it's a way to bypass certain reproductive hurdles.
Infertility is generally defined as the inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. For women over 35, this timeframe shortens to six months. The reality is, pinpointing the exact cause can require several diagnostic steps.
Often, there are no obvious warning signs. Infertility itself is usually discovered when a couple struggles to conceive. However, underlying conditions causing infertility might present with specific signs.
This is where most patients struggle.
So what does that mean for you? Early investigation is key if conception is proving difficult.
The IVF journey involves several stages, each carefully managed by specialists. We often see people feeling anxious, but knowledge is empowering.
Initially, fertility medications are given to stimulate the ovaries. The goal is to encourage the development of multiple mature eggs, rather than the single egg typically released each month. This phase usually lasts about 8-14 days. Monitoring via ultrasounds and blood tests is vital.
Once the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure is performed to retrieve them. This is typically done under sedation. A thin needle is guided by ultrasound to collect the eggs from the follicles in the ovaries. Honestly, this is a quick procedure, usually taking about 20-30 minutes.
The retrieved eggs are then combined with a sperm sample in the laboratory. Fertilization can occur naturally in a petri dish (conventional IVF) or through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into each egg. ICSI is often used when male factor infertility is present.
The fertilized eggs, now called embryos, are cultured in the lab for 3 to 5 days. Embryologists monitor their development closely. This period allows us to select the healthiest embryos for transfer.
A chosen embryo is transferred into the woman's uterus using a thin catheter. This procedure is usually painless and doesn't require anesthesia. The number of embryos transferred depends on factors like age and embryo quality, following guidelines from bodies like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Here's where it gets interesting.
Progesterone medication is often prescribed to help prepare the uterine lining for implantation. A pregnancy test is typically performed about 10-14 days after the embryo transfer. But why does this happen? It takes time for the embryo to implant and for hCG levels to rise sufficiently.
Like any medical procedure, IVF carries some risks, including Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), multiple pregnancies, and ectopic pregnancy. Success rates vary widely depending on factors such as age, the cause of infertility, and the clinic's expertise.
What most people miss is that IVF is not always a one-time success; multiple cycles may be needed. Living with this is genuinely hard, but advancements continue to boost outcomes.
In my 14 years at Apollo Hospitals, I've seen people achieve their dreams through IVF. It requires patience, emotional strength, and a supportive medical team. Remember, seeking timely aid can make a significant difference.
While rare, some individuals may conceive naturally after undergoing IVF. However, the underlying fertility issues often persist, making continued treatment or further IVF cycles a more reliable option.
Most people overlook this completely.
There's no fixed number; it varies greatly among individuals. Some achieve success in the first cycle, while others may require multiple attempts. Factors like age and diagnosis play a vital role.
The egg retrieval procedure involves discomfort and is performed under sedation. The embryo transfer is generally painless. Some soreness or cramping might occur post-retrieval.
Always consult a qualified physician before making medical decisions.
