By Dr. Priya Sharma, MD β Internal Medicine Specialist, Apollo Hospitals, Delhi
That persistent ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound in your ears β itβs called tinnitus. Many of us have experienced it at some point, perhaps after a loud concert. However, for some, it's a constant companion. Living with this is genuinely hard. In my practice, I've seen patients struggle significantly with this often-invisible condition.
What most people miss: Tinnitus isn't a disease itself but a symptom of an underlying issue. Pinpointing the cause is crucial for effective management.

The most frequent causes include age-related hearing loss and prolonged exposure to loud noises, which damage the inner ear's delicate structures. Earwax blockage and certain medications are also significant contributors.
This is where most those affected struggle.
While tinnitus is often not serious and can be caused by simple factors like earwax, it can sometimes indicate an underlying health issue. Pulsatile tinnitus or tinnitus accompanied by dizziness or sudden hearing loss warrants immediate medical attention.
